WELCOME to the Yates Heritage Tours Project's Website!
Yates Heritage Tours Project came to be in April 2010 when four history loving friends got together to form a company with the goal of gathering, preserving and promoting the history of Yates County and the region. It was and is our hope that we may help both residents and visitors to learn more about the fascinating history of the area. And, in the process, understand the importance of preserving that history.
We began with a book and audio CD self-driving tour focused on Jemima Wilkinson, the Public Universal Friend, and her followers, the first white settlement of this region. Our next area of concentration was the Village of Penn Yan with a coloring and activity book for children, and an architectural guide. Next came A Walk Along Penn Yan's Main Street, a walking tour of Penn Yan's historic Main Street. Then a 631 page two book set, Penn Yan & How It Got That Way, detailing the history of Penn Yan from the big bang through 1989 by Yates County Historian, Frances Dumas. Future projects focused on Penn Yan will include an update of Ms. Dumas' book A Good Country, A Pleasant Habitation, a book and tour of the Lake View Cemetery, and a walking guide focused on the geology of the Keuka Lake Outlet.
In addition to these projects the group has created a Penn Yan Plaque Program for Penn Yan's Historic Preservation District. Perhaps you have noticed some plaques explaining the history of historic buildings as you walk around Penn Yan.
We hope that you find the site interesting and easy to use. We plan to add material with a focus on history frequently, so check back often.
